Famous People With Asperger’s – Adam Young

Famous People With Asperger’s: Adam Young

Only about 25% of people are Introverts. There are even fewer that are as extreme as I am. This leads to a lot of misunderstandings, since society doesn’t have very much experience with my people. (I love being able to say that.)  Adam Young

famous people with aspergers adam youngAdam Young, one of many famous people with Asperger’s,  is a  prolific song writer and musician who broke onto the American music scene in April 2007.

He says he’s got Asperger’s syndrome.

It’s hard to judge whether this is 100% true, since other blog writers say he was just joking when he said it.

But I have reasons to believe he might really have Aspergers.

He’s an insomniac.

This is not to say that every single person on the autism spectrum has insomnia.  But a good number of Aspies have related difficulty sleeping.  According to Drs Goldman and Berkman, studies find that about 73% of children with Asperger’s Syndrome (AS) experience sleep problems, and these problems tend to last longer in this group than they do for children without AS.

It’s during the twilight between waking and sleeping that Adam composes most of his music.

He’s an extreme introvert.

Introversion and extroversion vary from person with people on the autism spectrum.  Because of difficulties with understanding social cues and making small talk, many people on the spectrum appear shy.

Adam said the most difficult part about fame was learning to perform in front of people.  Before every performance he still has a huge case of butterflies.  But when he starts playing the music, it’s just him and the melodies, and he has a great time.  Music has been his specialized interest and passion, and it calms him, just as surfing calms Clay Marzo, and numbers calm Michael Burry.

Adam confesses he didn’t have many, if any friends in high school.  He found solace with writing and performing music in his parents’ basement.  But he also found some company at his church youth group, where he played worship music.

However, Adam prides himself in being an introvert.

He’s very shy about dating.

From everything I’ve read, he doesn’t have a girlfriend yet, even though he confessed to a passing crush on Taylor Swift.  He couldn’t get a date to his senior prom.

Since people on the spectrum can struggle with the social effort of starting and maintaining relationships,  dating would be a jump to the next level.

He is terrified of telephone conversations

He’s learned to come out of his shell to go on live interviews.  But early on, he conducted a lot of interviews via e-mail.  Brian King, an online acquaintance with Aspergers, has written that he also hates the telephone.  I’m guessing that telephone conversations require a lot of the same mechanics as small talk in conversation, which would be consistent with Adam’s preference for email versus talking on the phone.

These facts don’t have anything to do with Aspergers, but everything to do with Adam.

I hope you enjoyed this post.  By the way, if anyone knows Adam’s email address, I’d love to get in touch with him to conduct an email interview for a more in-depth understanding of how living with Aspergers has affected his life.
