Discover These Autism Teaching Resources

I’m so grateful to all the gifted teachers and other school personnel who dedicate their lives to making a difference in the lives of children on the autism spectrum.  A teacher can spend up to 40 hours a week with children and teenagers on the autism spectrum.  Imagine the impact s/he can have!

That’s why I’ve dedicated this article to putting together some research into autism teaching resources from around the world wide web.  You’ll want to check these out.  I’m also open to any other resources, sites, or books you may have run across.  I’ll add them to the list as I go along.

Cindy’s Autistic Support page

is a little difficult to navigate, but seems to have a wealth of information for teachers who want to learn more about how to more effectively teach for individuals on the spectrum.

Teaching Students With Autism.

This is a pdf document by the British Columbia Department of Special Education.  Published in 2000, this resource contains 9 chapters covering the following topics: “What is Autism?”, “Characteristics Associated with Autism”, Planning Support for Students with Autism”, “Managing Challenging Behavior”, “Teaching Students with Asperger’s Syndrome”, “Transition Planning”, “Pulling It All Together: Developing an IEP”, and “Case Studies.”

I’m pretty enthusiastic about this site, and I share it on a recurring basis on Twitter. Here’s a little backround about Jason Wallin, the site author.  (This comes from the research study site called Child Gesture)

Jason is an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Psychology at Central Washington University (CWU) and a graduate student in Experimental Psychology.

Jason has been working for young children with special needs and typical development for more than a decade, as a paraprofessional in the Oak Harbor School District and as a private tutor, program consultant, and educator. Jason founded the popular, a site devoted to teaching children with autism.

This site has the following valuable autism teaching resources for you:

Printable Documents, including data sheets, teaching materials, and other resources.

A Discussion list so that you can interact with other teachers who are teaching students on the autism spectrum.

Curricula with lesson plans to help the teacher select materials specifically targeted for children with autism.

A list of autism treatments used to teach children with autism.

A link to further resources for teaching children with autism.

Teaching Students With Autism

This brief articlecontains some helpful general considerations for teaching children with autism.

Teaching Tips for Children and Adults with Autism

Dr. Temple Grandin, herself an adult on the autism spectrum, wrote this very extensive and practical article.  I truly appreciate articles written by an individual on the spectrum, who herself is a teacher!  So pay close attention to what she has to say :)

I’ve done some research on to find some books for teaching autism.  Please note that I have not had a chance to read all of these.

1001 Great Ideas for Teaching and Raising Children with Autism or Asperger’s, Revised and Expanded 2nd Edition, by Ellen Notbohm.

The Social Skills Picture Book Teaching play, emotion, and communication to children with autism, by Jed E. Baker.

Social Skills Training for Children and Adolescents with Asperger Syndrome and Social-Communications Problems, by Jed E. Baker.

I can personally vouch for this resource from Dr. Baker.  It’s full of very detailed, step-by-step skills to teach children with autism, aspergers, and non-verbal learning disorders.

This is just a starting point of building more exhaustive resource lists for teaching children and adults on the autism spectrum.  You can also check out some of my favorite autism books as well.

Please feel free to share any best resources: Books, DVD’s, or Websites that can better support teachers who are helping individuals on the autism spectrum.
